Whether you’re replacing a worn-out awning or upgrading, choosing the right type makes a big difference to how you use your caravan. Here’s a quick comparison of the three main types we supply and fit.
Manual roll-out awnings
The traditional caravan awning. The vinyl rolls out on a roller and is supported by arms that lock into place.
- Pros: simple, reliable, generally the most affordable, easy to repair
- Cons: takes a bit more effort to set up and pack away; the vinyl is exposed to the weather when rolled up
- Best for: budget-conscious owners and those who want something simple and proven
Cassette (box) awnings

The awning rolls up into a hard case mounted on the side of the van, protecting the vinyl when it’s not in use.
- Pros: the vinyl is protected from sun, dust and weather when packed away, giving it a longer life; neat, modern look
- Cons: usually costs more than a standard roll-out
- Best for: vans that spend a lot of time on the road or stored outdoors
12-volt electric awnings
A motorised awning that rolls out and in at the push of a button.
- Pros: very quick and easy — great if you move camp often or have limited mobility
- Cons: the highest cost, and relies on your 12V system; it should still be packed away in strong wind
- Best for: travellers who want convenience, including many grey nomads
