Heading off on a big trip — up the coast, out west or around Australia? The last thing you want is a breakdown hundreds of kilometres from help. A bit of preparation before you leave makes all the difference.
Book a service before you go
If your van hasn’t been serviced in the last 12 months or 10,000 km, book a comprehensive service a few weeks before you leave. That gives time for any parts to arrive and repairs to be done. Bearings, brakes and suspension take the most punishment on long trips — especially on rough or corrugated roads.
Running gear
- Tyres — tread, sidewalls, pressures and age (including the spare)
- Wheel nuts tightened to the correct torque
- Brakes adjusted and electric brakes working
- Suspension, springs and shackles in good condition
Towing and safety
- Coupling, safety chains and shackles in good condition
- All lights, indicators and brake lights working
- Breakaway system tested and battery charged
- Fire extinguisher fitted and in date
- Weights checked — don’t exceed your van’s or vehicle’s limits
On board
- Roof and window seals checked for leaks
- Water pump, taps and tanks working
- Fridge, hot water and appliances tested
- Batteries charged and 12V system working
- Awning rolls out and back in smoothly
Pack a basic kit
- Spare wheel, jack and wheel brace that suit your van
- Tyre pressure gauge and compressor
- Basic tools, cable ties, tape and spare fuses
- Spare globes for lights
